Welcome to the Stony Brook Camera Club
For over 50 years SBCC's mission statement has been “To promote enjoyment and proficiency in all aspects of photography through education, fellowship, exchange of knowledge and experience; and a broad appreciation of nature and environment.”
SBCC includes and welcomes members of all abilities. Whether a casual smartphone shooter or an advanced photographer, everyone grows in knowledge and experience through SBCC’s many programs and workshops.
The Stony Brook Camera Club meets in-person and/or virtually on Thursdays at 7:30pm from September to June. In-person social hour begins at 6:30pm and zoom social hour is 7:00pm. January 15, 2026 - The Power of Imaging to Push Creative Boundaries with Gerri Jones via Zoom
Sponsored by Hunts
This presentation will focus on how we choose to create stories with our imagery that resonate with your own personal photographic journey. Ways to overcome a creative rut are discussed with helpful strategies. Choosing to create photographs, by always using a standard set of rules which seek perfection, can sometimes lead us to missed opportunities to make a “beautiful mess”. Gerri will discuss how choosing to shoot with the addition of all manual optics (such as Lensbabies or Vintage lenses), has led her to a more creative path…a path which let’s go of perfection and pushes oneself to challenge those creative boundaries for personal growth.
BIO: Gerri enjoys photographing all subjects and especially the challenge of new ways to see through the creative use of Lensbaby lenses. She is a Lensbaby Ambassador and resides in Buffalo, New York.
Gerri has been a featured speaker/instructor at regional camera conferences including Mike Moats Macro Conventions, Hazel Meredith’s Creative Photography Conferences, New England Camera Club Council (NECCC) Photo Conference and Out of Chicago Conferences. Gerri also instructs in creative photography presentations with camera clubs, in person or online.
Gerri’s images have been featured in several publications, commercial proposals and she also has reviewed several photography books for development by Focal Press Publications. Her images have received several first-place awards in national, regional and online photo competitions.

January 22, 2026 - From All Angles: Abstract Geometric Architecture with Dan Waterman via Zoom
Sponsored By Hunts
In this presentation, Dan will discuss a modernist approach to abstract architecture inspired by the style of Group f.64, with a strong emphasis on geometry and compositional techniques. He’ll explain his thought process, how to use different lenses (from ultrawide to super-telephoto), and post-processing tools using Photoshop and Lightroom to create compelling architectural imagery.
BIO: Dan Waterman is a full-time digital media designer and photographer based in Warwick, RI. Propelled by a love for photography and communication, his interest in the visual arts has led to expertise in a variety of disciplines including design, web development, project management, marketing, and branding. He deeply values engaging with the creative community, sharing tools and knowledge to empower, inspire and learn from other like-minded people.
Dan first picked up a camera 20 years ago and was captivated by the methodical, process-oriented approach to composition and exposure. His passion has only grown since then, and he now spends every possible moment exploring and capturing the world’s varied landscapes.
His work can be seen at danwdesign.com.

February 7, 2026 - Camera Basics with Tom Amsterburg, Linda Rondeau, and Jim West
Do you find yourself always using Auto mode and not using the many other creative capabilities your digital camera has? If so, this workshop is for you. Topics we will cover include exposure (exposure triangle, equivalent exposure, the histogram, exposure compensation) depth of field, camera shooting modes (manual, aperture priority, shutter priority, etc.), raw vs. jpg, white (color) balance, focus settings, exposure metering modes, and shutter release modes. Some more advanced topics will be addressed if time permits.
This workshop is for both beginners and more experienced photographers wanting a refresher on the basics or who may be trying to learn the features of a new camera. The workshop will include some group exercises to immediately put what you learn into practice. We will survey the group participants prior to the workshop to determine what cameras they primarily use, so we can be ready to help them as needed.
